Writing under my pseudonym, Amelia Chaffinch, I was born in England but moved to Wales when I was just a young child. Now a fluent Welsh speaker and married with three grown up daughters and several grandchildren, I produce children’s books, notebooks and journals in both English and Welsh, whilst also writing my first novel.

A lot of thought went into the designing the book and its characters. As two of my daughters have dyslexia, I used a coloured background behind the text to make reading easier. The characters also have meaning: Celyn, the red dragon, represents Wales, Aurora, the unicorn, represents Scotland, Derwyn, the lion, represents England, and Bramble, the hare, represents Ireland. Luna, the owl, reflects wisdom and reading, while Hetty the elephant is central to the story of how Elephant Mountain was created.

Ysgrifennu dan fy ffugenw, Amelia Chaffinch, cefais fy ngeni yn Lloegr ond symudais i Gymru pan oeddwn yn blentyn ifanc. Bellach rwy’n siarad Cymraeg yn rhugl, yn briod ac yn fam i dair o ferched sydd wedi gadael y nyth ac rwan hefyd yn nain. Rwy’n treulio fy amser hamdden yn cynhyrchu llyfrau plant, llyfrau nodiadau a chyfnodolion yn y Gymraeg â’r Saesneg, tra hefyd yn ysgrifennu fy nofel gyntaf.

Rhoddwyd llawer o feddwl i ddyluniad y llyfr a’i gymeriadau. Gan fod dyslecsia ar ddwy o fy merched, defnyddiais gefndir lliw y tu ôl i’r testun i’w gwneud yn haws ei ddarllen. Mae ystyr i’r cymeriadau hefyd: mae Celyn, y ddraig goch, yn cynrychioli Cymru, Aurora, yr unicorn, yn cynrychioli’r Alban, Derwyn, y llew, yn cynrychioli Lloegr, a Bramble, yr ysgyfarnog, yn cynrychioli Iwerddon. Mae Luna, y dylluan, yn adlewyrchu doethineb a darllen, tra bod Hetty, yr eliffant, yn ganolog i’r stori am sut y crëwyd Mynydd Eliffant.

As a young child, whenever I was lucky enough to be given pocket money, I would run to the local newsagent’s shop where, rather than buying sweets, I would linger at the stationery shelf pondering which notebook or pencil to buy. I would then rush back home to place my new treasured purchase with my growing collection in the school-style desk with a lift-up lid that my father had built for me – dreaming of one day becoming a successful author. To this day, the stationery section is my favourite department when visiting a store!

Pan yn plentyn ifanc, pryd bynnag oeddwn yn ddigon ffodus i gael arian poced, byddwn yn rhedeg i’r siop leol lle, yn hytrach na phrynu da-da, byddwn yn sefyll ger y silff lyfrau yn meddwl pa lyfr nodiadau neu bensil i’w brynu. Yna byddwn yn brysio’n ôl adref i roi fy nhrysor newydd gyda’m casgliad cynyddol yn y ddesg ysgol gyda chaead oedd yn codi, a adeiladwyd gan fy nhad i mi – gan freuddwydio am y diwrnod y byddwn yn awdures lwyddiannus. Hyd heddiw, fy hoff adran pan yn ymweld â siop yw’r adran nwyddau ysgrifennu!

When I’m not busy writing, I find inspiration in the picturesque countryside that surrounds my home. This peaceful setting fuels my passion for a variety of creative hobbies, most notably crochet and jewellery making.
